Piombino


Piombino is located in the final part of the Etruscan Coast and it is only 15 minutes driving from San Vincenzo. It has an important port for freight transport and touristic port to visit the Tuscan Archipelago. Certainly you will impress you the tour of its historical Center and Piazza Bovio , one of the most beautiful in Italy. Through the“Torrione” ( Big Tower) , the ancient gateway to the town dating back to 1200, you enter into the town and you will be impressed by the “Rivellino” a semicircular, military structure , built for defensive purposes.
Then a small part of pedestrian road, where you can find many shops and restaurants : (Il Garibaldi innamorato, Taverna Boncompagni, Osteria Volturno) and where in the summer are organized some events that involves adults and children (Music Festivals, Theater Pieces,and children activities). At the end of the road rises the Palazzo Comunale ( Municipality Palace) and the “Torre dell’orologio” .

There, you will be in the nicest Piombino place: the terrace of Piazza Bovio just restored . It was built on the top of a cliff overlooking the sea, it dominates the Canal that separates it from Elba Island . If the weather is clear you can see : Montecristo, Giglio, Capraia and Corsica islands. From Piazza Bovio is possible to see the old Port, used even today by fishermen to moor small boats and “Fonte dei Canali” (Canals Source) where the water flows from the snake -shaped heads, made by Nicola Pisano.
